The software factories are inspired by a romantic understanding of how real factories supposedly work. Such assumptions create ineffective software development processes, which neither resemble real factories nor solve the challenges of product development. However, theses factories fantasies continue to be appealing since they are linked to certain ‘universal truths’ (i.e. Economies of Scale, Task Specialization, …). So these ‘truths’ have to be deconstructed before presenting agile concepts. This presentation equips the audience with the right tools for such a technical discussion. First, by showing that these factory fantasies do not correspond to modern production processes. Second, by demonstrating that wrong assumptions about software development lead to dysfunctional processes.
